An increasingly fragmented range and natural habitats that have gradually disappeared from our modern landscapes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinquarries.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Wanlin_2019_PH-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2658\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinquarries.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Wanlin_2019_PH-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lifeinquarries.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Wanlin_2019_PH-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lifeinquarries.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Wanlin_2019_PH-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lifeinquarries.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Wanlin_2019_PH-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lifeinquarries.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Wanlin_2019_PH-2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">The &#8220;Life in Quarries&#8221; travel agency<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">After it emerged from its annual<strong> hibernation phase<\/strong>, which lasts <strong>from October to early March<\/strong> (depending on climate change), <em>Bufo calamita<\/em> has enjoyed the <strong>pleasures of procreation in mid-April<\/strong>, after wich, it has layed thousands of eggs measuring 1 to 2 millimetres, grouped around <strong>thin cords up to two meters long<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For the <em>Life in Quarries<\/em> project teams, this time of the year means it&#8217;s <strong>time to act<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Indeed, in addition of its multiple missions, the <em>Life in Quarries<\/em> project conducts annual translocation campaigns for 3 species of endangered amphibians: the <strong>Crested Newt<\/strong> (Triturus cristatus), the <strong>Yellow-bellied Ringlet<\/strong> (Bombina variegata) and our star of the day ; the Natterjack Toad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Our objective: to translocate them to several quarries where the species is absent. The reason why, the <em>Life in Quarries<\/em> teams have been, since early May, struggling to collect Natterjack toad&#8217;s eggs in several temporary &#8220;spring ponds&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinquarries.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Capture-d\u2019e\u0301cran-2020-05-05-a\u0300-12.41.46.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" process<\/strong>, that required careful preparation over several years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>So many variables<\/strong> were to be taken in count : defining the quarries from which the target species are absent, studying the populations present at each &#8220;source site&#8221;, drawing up inventories to ensure that sampling would not have a negative impact on the base population, testing these populations using genetic analyses to check the absence of several pathogens, identifying at each translocation site the most appropriate water points for each species or &#8211; in their absence &#8211; digging them out, watching over the exstence of a networks of ponds protected from construction machinery by natural defences&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The <strong>2019 campaign having been a success<\/strong>, other quarries of the project on which the species has no chance to reach without a helping hand have been selected this year to come and deposit Natterjack&#8217;s eggs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The sweet sound of backhoe loaders<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"Sp1.s1.1_o\" class=\"systran_seg\" data-key=\"0\" data-editortype=\"target\"><span class=\"tokens_created\"><span class=\"token_created\">Because<\/span>\u00a0<em><span class=\"token_created\">Bufo<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">calamita<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">is<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">not<\/span>\u00a0to be found\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">in<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">the<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">gardens<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">or<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">the<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">forests.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"Sp1.s1.2_o\" class=\"systran_seg\" class=\"token_created\">one and is<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">not<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">afraid<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">of<\/span>\u00a0harsh landscapes that would look inhospitable at first sight to anyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"Sp1.s1.3_o\" class=\"systran_seg\" data-key=\"2\" data-editortype=\"target\"><span class=\"tokens_created\"><span class=\"token_created\">On<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">the<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">contrary, and as many other pioneer species like this little toad, it\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"Sp1.s1.4_o\" class=\"systran_seg\" data-key=\"3\" data-editortype=\"target\"><span class=\"tokens_created\"><span class=\"token_created\">requires<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">new,<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">unstable,<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">virgin,<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">and<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">organic-poor<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"token_created\">habitats<\/span><span class=\"token_created\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"Sp1.s1.5_o\" class=\"systran_seg\" data-key=\"4\" data-editortype=\"target\"><span class=\"tokens_created\"><span special process, have been, this 2020 spring, criss-crossing Wallonia &#8211; paying particular attention to the special measures, dues to the COVID-19 pandemic required at the moment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">At the various &#8220;source sites&#8221; located within a radius of 20 kilometres of their respective &#8220;quarry sites&#8221;, our teams kneel down with a kneecap in the water, roll up their sleeves and try to recover the precious egg-laying fragments with all due gentleness.
